Geofencing is the use of digital boundaries to define where a vehicle is authorised to operate. In autonomous logistics, a geofenced zone is a digitally defined area — configured in the fleet management platform — within which the vehicle can navigate and complete missions. The vehicle cannot leave this area without authorisation.
Why Geofencing Matters for Safety
Autonomous vehicles operating without geofencing could potentially navigate into restricted areas, public roads or unsafe zones. Geofencing prevents this by enforcing operational boundaries at the software level — the vehicle's onboard systems and the fleet platform both enforce the zone boundaries. If a vehicle approaches a boundary, it slows and stops before crossing.

How Geofencing Is Configured
Geofenced zones are defined during the site assessment and commissioning phase. WOX engineers survey the operating area, identify approved routes and zone boundaries, and configure these in the WOX Fleet Platform. Zone updates can be made by WOX engineers — either on site or remotely — as operational requirements change.
Geofencing in Different Environments
Geofencing requirements vary by environment. In airports, geofencing separates airside and landside zones. In hospitals, it defines approved corridors and excludes restricted clinical areas. On campuses, it defines approved pathways and excludes pedestrian-only areas. In industrial parks, it separates vehicle and pedestrian zones. Each deployment has a custom geofenced configuration.
Geofencing and Regulatory Compliance
In many jurisdictions, operating autonomous vehicles in controlled areas requires demonstrating that the vehicle cannot leave the approved operating zone.
